Stay Powered Up: A Traveler’s Guide to Power Banks

When traveling, whether it’s an international getaway, a cross-country road trip, or a cruise, staying connected is essential. From navigating with GPS to capturing memories on your phone or keeping in touch with loved ones, having a reliable power source is crucial. A portable power bank ensures your devices stay charged, no matter where your journey takes you. I always travel with a power bank that fits in my purse. Because I take SO many pictures on trips (and doing so drains the battery), I need to charge my phone on the go, so my trusty power bank allows me to keep snapping photos. And that makes me happy!

Portable power banks come in various sizes, capacities, power outputs, and colors.

Why You Need a Power Bank

A power bank provides peace of mind. It allows you to:

  • charge multiple devices, including tablets, e-readers, and even laptops.
  • juice up your phone while using it to for GPS and/or taking pictures and videos.
  • stay connected with family and friends.
  • use apps without worrying about battery life.
  • keep connected with travel providers such as hotels, car rental agencies, and airlines.
  • keep your phone charged for emergencies.

Choosing the Right Power Bank

Not all power banks are created equal. Here’s what to consider:

Capacity (mAh)

Measured in milliampere-hours (mAh), this determines how much charge a power bank holds.

  • 5,000–10,000 mAh: Ideal for charging a smartphone once or twice.
  • 10,000–20,000 mAh: Great for multiple phone charges or charging a tablet.
  • 20,000 mAh+: Can charge larger devices like laptops and multiple phones.

Power Output (W)

A power bank’s wattage (W) determines how fast it can charge your devices.

  • 10W–15W: Standard charging speed for phones.
  • 18W–30W: Fast charging for tablets and some laptops.
  • 45W+: Required for most laptops and high-power devices.

Port Type & Number of Ports

Look for:

  • USB-A (older but still common)
  • USB-C (fast charging and used for modern devices)
  • Multiple ports if you need to charge more than one device at a time.

Size & Weight

Consider portability. A 10,000 mAh power bank fits easily in a purse or pocket, while a 20,000 mAh+ model might be bulkier but is better for longer trips.

Best Practices for Using a Power Bank

  • Charge it before you leave: Ensure your power bank is fully charged before traveling.
  • Use the right cable: Match your device’s power needs with a compatible cable.
  • Store in a safe place: Keep it in a carry-on bag for easy access.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures: Heat and cold can affect battery life.
  • Turn off unused devices: This conserves power while charging.

Charging Your Power Bank

  • Overnight charging: Charge it while you sleep so it’s ready the next day.
  • Use fast-charging options: If your power bank supports it, use a fast charger for quicker top-ups.
  • Charge when you can: Plug it in whenever you have access to an outlet, like at hotels, cafés, or airports.

Accessories to Consider

  • Multi-port USB charger: Allows you to charge your devices and power bank simultaneously.
  • Short Charging Cables for Your Devices – A 1-ft cable is perfect for travel and avoids tangling.
  • Universal Travel Adapter – If going abroad, make sure your wall charger works with international plugs.
  • Protective Case: Helps prevent damage when carrying it in your bag.
  • Portable Solar Charger – If you’ll be camping or off-grid, consider a solar-powered charger as a backup.

TSA Guidelines for Power Banks

When flying, you must carry your power bank in your carry-on luggage—they are not allowed in checked bags. The TSA restricts lithium-ion batteries based on capacity:

  • Up to 100Wh (watt-hours): Allowed without airline approval (most power banks fall within this limit).
  • 100Wh–160Wh: Requires airline approval.
  • Above 160Wh: Not permitted on flights.

To calculate watt-hours, use this formula: (mAh × Voltage) / 1,000 = Wh (most power banks list this on the label).

Final Thoughts

I’d be lost without a portable power bank when I travel. It’s my essential travel companion (in addition to my husband!), ensuring I stay connected and stress-free while on the go.

You can keep all your devices powered throughout your journey by choosing the right capacity, number of ports, and accessories. Remember to keep your power bank charged and in your personal carry-on item (when flying), and enjoy every moment of your adventure without worrying about a dead battery!

Keeping your phone charged while on the go can be a lifesaver!
