Why Short-Term Rentals Make Travel More Authentic

Travel can be a lot more than checking off famous landmarks. Instead, it’s about slowing down, connecting with local culture, savoring regional flavors, and enjoying the rhythm of everyday life. That’s exactly why short-term rentals have become such a popular choice for travelers who want a more meaningful experience.

My husband and I have rented apartments and houses throughout Europe, Canada, and the U.S. for many years. Time and again, we find ourselves choosing rentals over hotels because of the extra space, added comfort, and the chance to truly “live like locals.” Also, short-term rentals often come at a surprisingly competitive cost compared to hotels.

Why Short-Term Rentals Are So Appealing

More Space and Comfort

First, short-term rentals typically offer far more space than a standard hotel. You’ll often find separate bedrooms, comfortable living areas, full kitchens, and even laundry facilities. This extra space is especially helpful when traveling with friends or family — and having laundry means you can pack lighter and travel more easily.

Privacy and Thoughtful Amenities

Another big advantage is privacy. You can arrive and leave on your own schedule, without the bustle of hotel hallways or housekeeping interruptions. Many rentals also include outdoor terraces, balconies, or gardens, which add a relaxing touch to your stay.

Better Value for Longer Stays

In addition, if you’re staying more than a few nights, rentals often provide excellent value. You’ll typically get more space and amenities for your money than by booking multiple hotel rooms.

A More Authentic Experience

Perhaps most importantly, short-term rentals are often located in residential neighborhoods. This allows you to experience daily life beyond the main tourist areas and gain a deeper appreciation for your destination.

How to Truly Live Like a Local

One of the most rewarding aspects of staying in a rental is immersing yourself in local life. Here are some simple ways to make the most of your experience.

Shop Where Locals Shop

Start by visiting neighborhood markets, bakeries, and small specialty shops. Pick up regional cheeses, fresh produce, or local treats to enjoy back at your “home away from home.”

Cook and Dine at Your Own Pace

Having a kitchen gives you wonderful flexibility. My husband and I almost always enjoy breakfast in our rental, and on longer stays, we sometimes prepare simple dinners depending on how busy the day has been. Cooking with local ingredients is not only enjoyable — it also lets you experience authentic flavors in a relaxed setting.

Explore Beyond the Tourist Trail

Instead of sticking only to major attractions, take time to wander. Walk or bike through quiet neighborhoods, browse local shops, or relax in neighborhood parks. In Europe, for example, a simple stroll down a cobblestone street often leads to a charming café or a small museum you might otherwise miss.

Connect With the Community

Whenever possible, attend local events, festivals, or art exhibits. Stop for coffee where residents gather, or chat with vendors at a market. These small interactions often become some of the most memorable moments of a trip.

Learn a Few Local Phrases

If visiting a place whose language is different than yours, learn simple greetings and questions. Doing so shows respect and often leads to warmer interactions.

Ultimately, living like a local transforms your trip into something more personal, relaxed, and memorable.

Tips for Choosing the Best Short-Term Rental

Read Reviews Carefully

First, look for properties with consistent positive feedback on cleanliness, photo accuracy, and responsive hosts. Reviews can reveal a lot about the overall experience. Even some negative ones can be helpful, especially if the reviewer had specific expectations.

Evaluate the Location

Location is key. Consider proximity to public transportation, attractions, grocery stores, and restaurants. Checking the address on Google Maps can help you see exactly what’s nearby and get a feel for the neighborhood.

City vs. Town/Village

Your ideal location for a short-term stay often depends on the size and layout of your destination. In a large city (such as New York City, Paris, or Vancouver), neighborhoods can vary widely, and attractions may be spread out. Because of this, it’s usually best to choose accommodations close to the sights and experiences on your itinerary to minimize travel time and make getting around easier.

By contrast, in a smaller town or village, most highlights are typically clustered together, so staying near the town or city center often puts you within easy walking distance of shops, restaurants, and local attractions, creating a more relaxed and convenient experience.

Confirm Amenities

Next, make sure the rental includes essentials such as reliable Wi-Fi, a well-equipped kitchen, heating or air conditioning, and laundry facilities if needed. When my husband and I travel, we find having a washer and dryer in the rental apartment a key benefit. It certainly helps us reduce what we pack, especially on our longer trips.

Understand Policies

Always review cancellation terms, check-in procedures, and any additional fees. Because I usually book trips at least six months in advance, I prefer rentals with flexible cancellation windows — typically two to four weeks before arrival — for added peace of mind. Add the cancellation date to your calendar as a reminder, should travel plans change.

Communicate With the Host

Finally, don’t hesitate to ask questions about accessibility, parking, neighborhood safety, or anything else that matters to you. Clear communication helps avoid surprises. I use this as a key indicator of how responsive a host can be when hiccups occur.

Final Thoughts

On many of our independent trips — the ones we plan and book ourselves — my husband and I choose short-term rentals. In Europe, we like finding out when market day takes place and picking up local produce, cheeses, and treats to enjoy back at the apartment.

We also tend to choose rentals in historic city centers so we’re within walking distance of major sights, markets, and parks.

If I could share one key piece of advice, it would be this: choose properties with dozens of reviews, including some from the past six months. Reading reviews carefully helps you understand the overall vibe, cleanliness, accuracy of descriptions, and the host’s responsiveness.

Overall, our experiences with short-term rentals have been overwhelmingly positive. We love having room to spread out, comfortable places to relax, and practical amenities — especially laundry. Compared to the limitations of a typical hotel room, a well-chosen rental truly feels like a home away from home.
